Brass inserts engineered for ultrasonic and heat-set installation

Prime Industrial Components manufactures Brass Ultrasonic Inserts for use in thermoplastics. These inserts are installed with an ultrasonic horn or heat driver, and are offered in a variety of designs, lengths and thread sizes.

Standard catalogue inserts run from 2 mm to 12 mm in ISO Metric, BA, BSW, UNC and UNF thread forms. Beyond catalogue, we can develop and supply any kind of special ultrasonic insert exactly as per customer specifications.

General background — how ultrasonic installation works

Ultrasonic horn vs heat driver installation

An ultrasonic horn applies high-frequency vibration to the insert, which generates heat at the brass/plastic interface and locally softens the surrounding thermoplastic. As the plastic flows around the insert's exterior knurling and grooves then re-solidifies, the insert is permanently locked in place — creating a strong, reusable internal thread for fastening.

A heat driver achieves the same result without ultrasonic equipment: it applies controlled heat directly to the insert, softening the surrounding plastic for embedding.

This section is general engineering background about ultrasonic insert installation methods, not a Prime-specific claim. Prime supplies the inserts; the installation is performed by the buyer on their molding line or assembly station.

Where ultrasonic inserts are used

Ultrasonic inserts are specifically designed for use in thermoplastics. The insert is embedded into the molded plastic component using an ultrasonic horn or heat driver, providing a robust threaded mounting point that can withstand repeated fastening cycles without stripping the surrounding plastic.

Typical use cases include plastic enclosures, consumer electronics, automotive interior components, and any thermoplastic assembly requiring a load-bearing metal thread.
